Brendan Benson and the Stiff Tissues

Gig Review and Photos by Dawn

Brendan Benson may just be the hardest working man in music. Relentlessly promoting current album The Alternative To Love, he and his band the Stiff Tissues have toured Britain twice this year, supported Keane on their American tour and are also squeezing in the odd festival appearance. When greeted with enthusiasm such as that of tonight's crowd, however, it must all seem worth it...

With three albums' worth of songs at his disposal, tonight Brendan provides a decent snapshot of each whilst simultaneously showcasing enough of his latest effort to convince anyone yet to part with their cash that it more than lives up to his previous two releases. Spit It Out alone is proof enough that the man in question has lost none of his ability to marry an charmingly clever use of language with an irresistible melody.

With audience reactions ranging from singing and cheering to head-banging and shouted declarations of love, it would be fair to say that Brendan looks more than a little overwhelmed by the out-pouring of adoration - if not slightly bemused as he tries to get his head around the very British "You rock my socks!" compliment shouted mid-set by a female fan ("I rock your socks off? Or I just rock your socks? ...I'll ponder that some more...") while guitarist/keyboard wizard Dean is visibly surprised and amused by the roof-raising cheers which greet the opening chords of Metarie.

It's virtually impossible to pick only one highlight from a set which burned brightly from start to finish, but an utterly explosive performance of Lapalco album track You're Quiet complete with three-part harmonies and wonderfully resonating guitars truly was a masterclass in creating musical perfection.

As if he hasn't worked hard enough already this year, Brendan and his boys tour the UK again in October. You'd be a fool to miss out.

With thanks to Brendan, Dean and the lovely Russ. Visit www.BrendanBenson.com for more info (and www.Fibbers.co.uk because we love it.)
