The Hold Steady | CD review | November 2007

THE HOLD STEADY - Massive Nights (Vagrant – 29/10/07)

Review by Dawn

The Hold Steady stole the show at numerous summer festivals and it’s easy to see why - this is the most exciting single to have graced the Record Overplayed stereo in a long time.

Massive Nights is the sound of the best party you’ve been to in your life – and then some. If the Springsteen-esque vocals and the infuriatingly catchy “oh-oh”s don’t win your heart, just wait until you’re drawn in by the Mountain Goats-style narrative – storytelling lyrics which seem so obvious that you wonder why no-one else has come up with them and which trip off the tongue accompanied by the songs wonderful guitar riffs.

The band’s fourth album is due out in 2008. On this evidence it promises to be truly brilliant.
