Sikth | CD review | 2003

SIKTH - Scent of the Obscene EP (Gut - 03/11/03)

Review by Dawn

Not only a contender for most charming title of the year, but also for most eclectic single of the year, London sextet Sikth release the follow-up to their much praised debut LP, the wonderfully-monikered The Trees Are Dead and Dried Out, Wait For Something Wild.

The song simply refuses to be pigeon-holed, encompassing so many different styles and tempos that you begin to wonder whether the CD has skipped onto a different track without you realising it - all of which is fascinating stuff, but makes it a very difficult single to review!

It's loud yet melodic; it's heavy yet haunting; it's crazy yet clever - and just when you think you've finally got the measure of it and know where it's going to go next, it changes into something else entirely. The only way to understand it is to listen to it!
