Magnet | CD review | 2005

MAGNET - The Tourniquet LP (Atlantic Records -22/08/05)

Review by Dawn

"Lovely" is the first word which always springs to mind upon listening to a Magnet CD, for Even Johansen is the master of swooning folk-pop soundscapes and lazily dreamy melodies.

We did all the bad name puns with Magnet's previous album, but that doesn't mean that there's nothing positive left to say about him this time around. From the curiously melancholic yet soaring Fall at Your Feet to the endearing quiet confidence depicted in Believe, The Tourniquet EP is breathtakingly beautiful.

Johansen's music is not dissimilar to that of the equally stunning Ben Christophers or Duke Special in that his carefully crafted melodic works of art are emotive, spectacular and... well, lovely.
