ANDY JONES - The Road to Santiago (From Teesside with Love)
Review by Dawn
I've sung the praises of Stockton singer/songwriter Andy Jones on Record Overplayed before, and his album is certainly no disappointment. Named after a thousand year old road spanning the whole of Northern Spain, it kicks off with the soaring vocals of Sail Away, the track which first brought Andy to my attention when included on a compilation CD of local acts in 2002, and the song is still as striking now as it was the first time I heard it. Third track Ayyee is the most flamenco-tinged of the whole album - close your eyes and you could be in a town square in Spain, sampling the delights of the local culture.
There are haunting backing vocals on I'm Alive, and Eternally is gorgeously heartfelt, but for me the two stand-out tracks are the piano-led Here I Stand and the slightly quirky Girl, with its Latino guitars and irresistible whistling.
A bloke from Teesside playing flamenco guitar might sound
like a strange concept to grasp... but it works. Check him out!
